The Chedi Katara Hotel & Resort

If you’re planning to stay at least one night in Doha on your layover, the Chedi Katara is an excellent hotel choice. This award-winning hotel offers impeccable service, lavish accommodations, and world-class facilities. Overall, it is one of the most impressive resorts I’ve ever stayed in.

From the massive infinity pool overlooking the Arabian Gulf to the indulgent spa treatments and afternoon tea, the Chedi Katara promises an unforgettable stay. It’s hard to describe how beautiful this hotel is… the architecture, the design, the decor, the lighting..even the smell! Best Things To Do During a Doha Layover

1. Take a Dhow Boat Around the Marina

Take a leisurely traditional dhow boat ride around the picturesque Arabian Gulf. Soak in the stunning views of the city’s skyline and luxurious yachts as you boat across the calm waters. We went during the day, but I think sunset would be the perfect time to do this activity!

Boat rides depart from the dhow harbor along the Corniche, the waterfront promenade in central Doha.
There are numerous small wooden dhow boats docked here, with boat captains/drivers waiting to take passengers on tours. You can simply walk up to the dock area and negotiate directly with the boat drivers for a ride.

Prices can vary based on your negotiation skills, but typical costs are:

  • 1 hour tour: 100-150 QAR ($27-$41 USD) per boat for up to 6 people
  • 2 hour tour: 200-300 QAR ($55-$82 USD) per boat

2. Wander Souq Waqif

No visit to Doha is complete without exploring the iconic Souq Waqif. This traditional marketplace is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, vibrant stalls, and captivating sights and sounds. Get lost, haggle for souvenirs, sample local delicacies, and immerse yourself in the authentic Arabian atmosphere while you are there. Additionally, visit the Falcon Souq to see these majestic birds up close and learn about the importance of falconry in Qatari culture. Then, stop by the Gold Souq section to browse intricate gold jewelry. There are also stables housing Arabian horses and pens with many camels. TBH it was sad seeing the camels chained up… I don’t support how the animals are treated.

I recommend going in the evening when it’s cooler. Make sure you are fully covered out of respect to the local customs whenever you are in public.

3. Explore Mina District & Have Coffee on the Port

The Mina District is a newly developed neighborhood in Doha, Qatar located along the city’s waterfront corniche and the perfect spot to spend time during your layover. It is part of the revitalized Old Doha Port area, transforming the former port into a tourist and leisure destination.

The area features cobblestone streets lined with colorfully painted low-rise buildings in a traditional Arabian architectural style. There are numerous cafes, restaurants, and retail shops to explore. You can stroll along the picturesque port and soak in the atmosphere. Stop for a coffee or juice at one of the cozy cafes and enjoy the stunning views of the harbor.

4. Walk Around Pearl Island & the Qanat Quatier Canal

Pearl Island is an upscale artificial island in Doha with a unique blend of modern architecture, waterways that make you feel like you’re in Venice, and vibrant dining and shopping experiences. It reminded me a little bit of Vegas, but better! Here are some highlights for exploring Pearl Island and the Qanat Quartier Canal area:

Qanat Quartier Canal

  • Stroll along the winding canals and across the arched bridges in this Venice-inspired neighborhood
  • Admire the colorful Mediterranean-style buildings lining the waterways

Dining & Shopping

  • Dine al fresco at one of the chic cafes and restaurants overlooking the canals
  • Browse the boutiques, art galleries, and shops housed in the Venetian-style buildings
  • Try a food tour to sample diverse cuisines

Activities & Attractions

  • Rent a pedal boat or gondola and cruise along the canals
  • Visit the Pearl Monument, a striking sculpture marking the entrance to the island
  • Walk or bike along the promenade encircling the island for views of the Doha skyline
  • Relax on the pristine beaches or at one of the beach clubs and resorts

With its blend of Venetian-inspired architecture, peaceful waterways, high-end shopping and dining options, the Qanat Quartier and Pearl Island are the perfect places to spend time on a layover in Doha.

5. Try Doha’s Famous Iced Mint Lemonade

Undeniably, no visit to Doha is complete without indulging in the city’s iconic iced mint lemonade. You’ll find it readily available at cafes and street vendors throughout the city. It’s so refreshing and not too sweet!

6. Have Dinner with a View of the City

Treat yourself to a memorable dining experience at Bayt El Talleh Restaurant, where you can indulge in incredible Middle Eastern cuisine while taking in breathtaking views of Doha’s skyline. Moreover, I recommend going there around sunset if you want to watch an incredible sunset over the city.

This traditional restaurant offers a unique blend of flavors and a very Arabic-inspired ambiance. Ask if you can sit on the patio and try their fixed menu so you can have a bite of everything! The restaurant is walkable from The Chedi Katara and has an amazing view overlooking the south hills of Katara Cultural Village.

7. Take a Scooter Along the Entire Corniche

The best way to explore Doha’s stunning Corniche, or waterfront promenade, is by renting an electric scooter. There are tons of different electric scooter brands around, including Lime. It shouldn’t be hard to find one. You can download one of the apps and set up your phone for payment.

The Corniche is huge and a scooter is the perfect way to see a little bit of everything quickly! There are many places to stop along the way, including fun beach clubs along the water! Check out Beach House or Doha 12 Beach Club for a perfect day lounging on the beach.

8. Explore Katara Cultural Village

Get ready for the most upscale outdoor mall/living area you’ve ever seen! Surprisingly, it even has air-conditioned SIDEWALKS!! Isn’t that crazy?? Katara Cultural Village features a blend of traditional and modern architecture, with buildings designed to reflect Qatar’s cultural heritage and Arabian styles. It has an open-air amphitheater, opera house, cinemas, conference halls, beaches, parks, and a traditional souq market. It’s a huge, wide-open area with so much to do and see.

Go shopping at Galeries Lafayette, the upscale French department store. Then, on Tasty Street, you can grab quick coffee or snacks from the food cabins lining this street. There are numerous cafes and restaurants to dine at. Climb the landscaped hill for panoramic views of the village and coastline, or have a picnic in the gardens. Alternatively, relax on the pristine public beaches or try water sports like kayaking, parasailing, and boat tours. And don’t miss the stunning Katara Mosque.

The Katara Mosque has the most incredible tilework I’ve ever seen. It was stunning to see during sunset.

9. Visit the Museum of Islamic Art

The Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) in Doha is an architectural and cultural gem in Doha. The museum sits on its own artificial island off Doha’s Corniche, with the iconic building rising from the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The exterior is stunning, with intricate latticed stonework, and the interior has a huge atrium with geometric domes and skylights.

The MIA houses one of the world’s most complete collections of Islamic art, with over 14,000 objects spanning 1,400 years of Islamic civilization. It’s a beautiful area, the architecture and art are incredible, and it’s a fun way to spend a few hours during your Doha layover.

General admission to MIA is 50 QAR (~$14 USD).

10. Relax at the Most Luxurious Hotel in Doha, Chedi Katara

The Chedi Katara is seriously one of the most impressive, beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed at. It’s the epitome of Arabian luxury. It’s the perfect place to spend some time relaxing during a multiple-day layover in Doha. The Chedi Katara is conveniently located in one of the best neighborhoods of Doha, the prestigious Katara Cultural Village (which you definitely need to spend time exploring!).

Every room has a beautiful view of the Arabian Gulf and most have a large deck where you can relax in privacy. You can spend time by the stunning infinity pool, which has panoramic views, or pamper yourself at their award-winning spa. They also have a separate adult pool, which I always appreciate. The food was absolutely delicious and they have a variety of different options including a lovely afternoon tea!

If you’re feeling extra indulgent, make a reservation at their overwater restaurant, La Marsa. It’s on a jetty over their private beach.

The official currency in Qatar is the Qatari Riyal (QAR). Major credit cards are widely accepted in Doha, but you should carry some cash for smaller purchases, taxis, and tipping.

Tipping in Doha

Tipping is not mandatory in Doha, but it is appreciated for good service. A 10% tip is generally acceptable at restaurants and hotels. For exceptional service, you can tip up to 15%. It’s also customary to tip tour guides, drivers, and porters a small amount.

What to Wear in Doha

Doha is a conservative city, and it’s important to dress modestly out of respect for local customs and traditions. Women should cover their shoulders, knees, and avoid revealing clothing. Men should also dress conservatively, avoiding shorts in public places. Lightweight, breathable fabrics are recommended due to the warm climate. Swimwear is acceptable at hotel pools and private beaches but should be covered when moving to and from these areas.

Qatar uses the British G-type plug. If your devices have different plugs, you’ll need a universal travel adapter to ensure compatibility with Qatari electrical outlets.

Cost of Visiting Doha

Doha is generally an expensive destination, especially for hotels and dining. High-end hotels and restaurants can be quite pricey, but there are also more budget-friendly options available. Arabic is the official language in Qatar, but English is widely spoken and understood, especially in tourist areas and businesses.

Visa Requirements for Doha

Citizens of many countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, and most European nations, can obtain a free visa on arrival in Qatar for stays of up to 30 days. It’s best to check the latest visa requirements with the Qatari embassy or consulate in your country before traveling.
