Kuala Lumpur, the vibrant capital of Malaysia, effortlessly blends modernity with tradition. From a myriad of street foods to ancient temples and natural wonders, there’s something for everyone in this bustling city. In my experience, people typically visit Kuala Lumpur as a stopover on their way to other parts of Southeast Asia (GUILTY!) – there is so much more than you may think!

I had no idea what an amazing city KL is! It’s super modern, easy to get around, and cheap (especially when you compare it to its neighbor Singapore). I can’t wait to go back and visit again and see other parts of Malaysia. This guide covers the top 10 unmissable things to do in Kuala Lumpur.

Where to Stay

Accommodations in KL are very cheap – especially luxury hotels! Here are some recommendations on the best places to stay:

How to Get to the City

Fly into Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Downtown is about 50km south of the city and it takes about an hour to get there depending on traffic. Traffic during rush hour can be really bad so be prepared! There are many direct flights into KL from around the world. There are also trains and long-distance buses from places like Singapore and Thailand.

Once you’re at the airport, there are numerous ways to get into the city depending on your budget, time, etc.

  1. KLIA Ekspres (Express Train): The fastest and most convenient option, priced at RM55 or $11.50 USD (one-way) to KL Sentral (but depending on where you are staying you may need to walk, or take a taxi etc.)
  2. Airport Taxi or Ride-Sharing (Grab): Direct service to downtown Kuala Lumpur for approximately RM75 to RM100 ($15 – $20 USD), depending on traffic.
  3. Pre-Booked Transfer: Pre-book a shuttle from the airport for about $30 USD. This is a great option if you just want to show up and not worry about transportation. The driver will be there waiting with a sign for you.
  4. Renting a Car: Flexibility to explore, but expect additional costs and potential parking challenges in downtown KL. Plus the drivers seem a little crazy!

How to Get Around Kuala Lumpur

Once you arrive in Kuala Lumpur, getting around the city is very convenient thanks to various modes of transportation, including:

  • Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Mass Rapid Transit (MRT): These rail systems connect key areas within Kuala Lumpur and its surrounding suburbs.
  • Monorail: The Kuala Lumpur Monorail provides access to popular tourist spots and shopping districts.
  • Taxis and Ride-Sharing Services (like Grab – which I use a lot in Southeast Asia): Both are readily available and super cheap.
  • Bus: Kuala Lumpur has an extensive network of public buses serving different routes within the city.
  • Walking: Some areas of Kuala Lumpur, such as Bukit Bintang and KLCC, are pedestrian-friendly.

10 Best Things to Do in Kuala Lumpur

1. Go on a Street Food Tour

Dive into Kuala Lumpur’s rich traditional street food scene by indulging in a variety of Malaysian foods in the less-touristy Chow Kit Market. Wander through the vibrant market on Sambal Street, and try a myriad of dishes such as satay, nasi lemak, char kway teow, and roti canai. This is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur and such an amazing way to learn more about all the different cultures that coexist in KL and how they influenced the city.

I recommend booking this small-group food tour: Sambal Streets Kuala Lumpur Food Tour with 15+ Tastings. Our guide, Kiran, was incredible and paced everything out really well over 4+ hours. She is super knowledgeable about the city, the culture, and of course the food. We liked being able to walk the whole tour so that we could make room for each dish, while also getting to know the city more. We even tried durian… (can’t say I liked it sadly!). Make sure you save room for the last stop – the best one!

2. Discover the Breathtaking Batu Caves

A trip to Kuala Lumpur wouldn’t be complete without visiting the iconic Batu Caves. This is one of the best things to do in Kuala Lumpur! These 400 million-year-old limestone caves feature Hindu shrines and statues, including the iconic towering golden Murugan statue. Hindus from all over the world come together during festivals to celebrate and pray as a community at this temple.

Climb 272 stairs (past all the monkeys – be careful of your stuff!) up to the main cave. The cave is absolutely massive and the vibrant colors of all the Hindu shrines are beautiful. It was truly breathtaking and worth the climb!

We did this tour and loved it! Private Half-Day Batu Caves and Cultural Tour in Kuala Lumpur. It was so convenient to have a driver and not worry about getting around. Our guide was also very knowledgeable about the city and Maylasia in general.

3. Explore Chinatown

Visit the vibrant neighborhood of Chinatown, where history and tradition converge. Chinatown in KL is filled with streets adorned with colorful shophouses, bustling markets, and ornate temples like the historic Sin Sze Si Ya Temple and the Sri Mahamariamman Temple. You can try different Chinese foods or bargain for souvenirs on Petaling Street.

4. Admire the Petronas Twin Towers

Admire the architectural marvel of the Petronas Twin Towers, once the tallest buildings in the world. Take a high-speed elevator to the observation deck on the 86th floor for panoramic views of the city skyline. Then, walk across the sky bridge connecting the two towers, for a unique perspective of Kuala Lumpur’s urban landscape.

To visit the towers, you’ll need to purchase tickets. It would be best to buy them online in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons, to secure your preferred time slot. Purchase Petronas Tower tickets via Viator and make your life easy.

The view of the Petronas Twin Towers is beautiful in the evening as well and I highly recommend seeing it from the Saloma Bridge.

Kuala Lumpur is known for its architecture. They are constantly in a race to build the world’s tallest building. Currently, it has the world’s second-largest building (Merdeka 118) after Dubai. While you’re walking around Kuala Lumpur, you’ll notice the impressive architecture around the city. The juxtaposition between the high rises and old historic neighborhoods is unique to see.

This private tour includes the Batu Caves & Petronas Observation Deck.

5. Visit the Incredible Thean Hou Temple

The Thean Hou Temple is one of the largest and most ornate Chinese temples in Southeast Asia. Perched atop a hill this architectural masterpiece features intricate carvings, decorative lanterns, and sprawling views of the city. Malaysia’s has such a rich cultural heritage and it’s really special to see each religion’s place of worship.

6. Wander Through Central Market

Check out Central Market and explore the vibrant arts and crafts scene. Browse through a myriad of stalls offering handicrafts, jewelry, and other souvenirs. There are also some great little food stalls and cafes. Right outside, lining the building are various vendors selling everything from delicious teas to homemade baked goods.

7. Go Shopping at Bukit Bintang

Head to Bukit Bintang, Kuala Lumpur’s premier shopping and entertainment district. Explore luxury boutiques, department stores, and bustling shopping malls like Pavilion Kuala Lumpur and Suria KLCC. Afterward, grab a coffee or meal at one of the trendy cafes or restaurants.

8. Indulge in the Food and Cocktail Scene

In neighborhoods like Bukit Bintang, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, and Bangsar, as well as streets such as Jalan Doraisamy, you can find a trendy food and cocktail scene. We loved Olea (Mediterranean)! If you are sick of Malaysian food, there are lots of other international options 🙂

9. Escape to the Tranquil Cameron Highlands

It’s very hot and sticky in KL. Many locals head to the Cameron Highlands, just a few hours’ drive from Kuala Lumpur, to escape the city. It’s much cooler and has a slower pace. You can visit the lush tea plantations, strawberry farms, and mossy forests. Enjoy leisurely walks amidst the refreshing mountain air and savor freshly brewed tea at the Cameron Valley Tea House.
